Before I Die by Jenny Downham is a popular book with many readers at the college and Morgan in Year 11 has reviewed it for us.Tessa is 16 and has lived with cancer since she was 12 years old. Battling her way through treatment after treatment as the cancer slowly consumes her, Tessa decides she wants to live her life to the fullest, no matter how short it is. This leads her to making a list – 10 things she wants to do before she dies. Number 1 is sex , then drugs because no matter what anyone says Tessa is determined to live out her life her way.A moving novel about death, loss, struggle, hope, love and ultimately acceptance, Jenny Downham manages to convey that after every thunderstom comes a rainbow and if you look hard enough you can see the gold in the little things.I found this novel very sad, but at the same time happy. It balances everything, death and life, Tessa and Zoey but also if you look beneath the surface it has all sorts of messages tied into the plot (I’ll let you find them !!!) I don’t think anyone could read this novel and not cry but also it’s the sort of book you can read over and over again and each time you do something gets a little clearer or you discover something new. Even though this book is sad I really enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to a year 12 or 13 English class as I imagine some things in it year 11 boys would be a bit immatre about!!
